What is a butt weld fitting?
A wrought steel fitting whose ends are bevelled to match the pipe, so it joins with a full-penetration circumferential weld. The result is a continuous, full-bore connection with no gasket, no bolting, and no restriction in the flow path, which is why butt welding is the standard joining method for permanent process piping.
What standard covers butt weld fittings?
ASME B16.9 governs dimensions and tolerances for factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings, including elbows, tees, reducers, caps, and stub ends. Material is specified separately: ASTM A234 for carbon and alloy steel, A403 for stainless, A420 for low-temperature service.
How do I know which schedule I need?
The fitting schedule matches the pipe it welds to, so the wall thicknesses line up at the weld and there is no step in the bore. Every table in this section is organised by schedule, from STD and XS through 40, 80, 160 and XXS, so you can read across from your pipe spec.
What is the difference between butt weld and socket weld fittings?
A butt weld fitting is bevelled and welded end-to-end with the pipe, giving a smooth full-bore joint suited to any size and pressure. A socket weld fitting has a bored recess that the pipe drops into, joined with a single fillet weld. That is quicker on small bore, but it leaves an internal crevice and is generally limited to NPS 2 and under.
