Pipe Schedule & Weight Calculator
Pick a nominal pipe size and schedule to get the outside diameter, wall thickness, inside diameter and weight per foot. Add a length to get total weight, water-filled weight and volume. Wall thicknesses come from the Texas Flange pipe wall thickness chart; weight uses the standard plain-end steel pipe formula, so you can also enter any custom OD and wall. How do you calculate steel pipe weight per foot?
Weight in pounds per foot equals 10.69 times (outside diameter minus wall thickness) times wall thickness, with both in inches. For 6 inch Schedule 40 (6.625 in OD, 0.280 in wall) that is about 18.97 lb/ft.
What is the difference between Schedule 40 and STD?
Up to 10 inch NPS, Schedule 40 and STD have the same wall. From 12 inch up, STD stays at 0.375 inch while Schedule 40 gets heavier, so the two are no longer interchangeable.
What is the difference between Schedule 80 and XS?
Up to 8 inch NPS they are the same wall. From 10 inch up, XS (extra heavy) stays at 0.500 inch while Schedule 80 gets heavier.
Does the pipe schedule change the outside diameter?
No. For a given NPS the OD is fixed; a heavier schedule adds wall thickness inward, so the inside diameter gets smaller.
How do I match a weld neck flange to my pipe?
Order the weld neck flange bored to the same schedule as the pipe so the flange bore matches the pipe inside diameter at the weld.
